Here it comes.
Our governorapos;s "probably youapos;re going to have to tighten the belt a bit" speech of last week (which Collegeapos;s president accurately translated as, "things are likely to look a bit grim by next week") was the lead-in to a speech that will be coming today at 5PM. The speech will address the specific cuts to be made in public services and state jobs--reports leaking out ahead of the speech suggest that there will be an immediate budget cut of 800 million dollars and over 1000 jobs statewide, "most of which will be addressed by layoffs, attrition and a hiring freeze."
Most? Are there other ways Iapos;m not aware of besides layoffs, attrition, and hiring freezes to reduce a workforce? Weapos;re not euthanizing state employees now, are we?
The Stateapos;s House Speaker, who met with the Governor and knows whatapos;s coming, said today, "His cuts are deep, and his cuts are going to be painful." As a member of a two-career family, both of whom are employed by city and state institutions, I am going to be listening with more than a passing interest to the precise nature of these "deep and painful" cuts. Unfortunately, Iapos;ll miss the immediate lead-up to the speech, since Iapos;ll be in a departmental meeting...most of which will be dedicated to the progress and materials surrounding the three job searches being conducted by my department, all three of which may very well be canceled by 5:01PM by a "hiring freeze."
Collegeapos;s last hiring freeze happened in apos;86. The English department didnapos;t get to make another hire until 1997, and the department is still recovering. I imagine this will be a topic of some discussion at the meeting.
